Modeling of Nematic Electrolytes and Nonlinear Electroosmosis

چکیده
Abstract. We derive a mathematical model of a nematic electrolyte based on the Leslie-Ericksen theory of liquid crystal flow. Our goal is to investigate the nonlinear electrokinetic effects that occur because the nematic matrix is anisotropic, in particular, transport of ions in a direction perpendicular to the electric field as well as quadratic dependence of the induced flow velocity on the electric field. The latter effect makes it possible to generate sustained flows in the nematic electrolyte that do not reverse their direction when the polarity of the applied electric field is reversed. From a practical perspective, this enables the design of AC-driven electrophoretic and electroosmotic devices. Our study of a special flow in a thin nematic film shows a very good agreement with laboratory experiments.

Analytical solution of the Hunter-Saxton equation using the reduced dierential transform method
In this paper, the reduced dierential transform method is investigated fora nonlinear partial dierential equation modeling nematic liquid crystals, itis called the Hunter-Saxton equation. The main advantage of this methodis that it can be applied directly to nonlinear dierential equations withoutrequiring linearization, discretization, or perturbation. It is a semi analytical-numerical method t...
متن کاملApplication of Genetic Programming to Modeling and Prediction of Activity Coefficient Ratio of Electrolytes in Aqueous Electrolyte Solution Containing Amino Acids
Genetic programming (GP) is one of the computer algorithms in the family of evolutionary-computational methods, which have been shown to provide reliable solutions to complex optimization problems. The genetic programming under discussion in this work relies on tree-like building blocks, and thus supports process modeling with varying structure. In this paper the systems containing amino ac...
متن کاملModeling thermodynamic properties of electrolytes: Inclusion of the mean spherical approximation (MSA) in the simplified SAFT equation of state
In this work, an equation of state has been utilized for thermodynamic modeling of aqueous electrolyte solutions. The proposed equation of state is a combination of simplified statistical associating fluid theory (SAFT) equation of state (similar to simplified PC-SAFT) to describe the effect of short-range interactions and mean spherical approximation (MSA) term to describe the effect of long-r...

Electroosmosis in homogeneously charged micro- and nanoscale random porous media has been numerically investigated using mesoscopic simulation methods which involve a random generation-growth method for reproducing three-dimensional random microstructures of porous media and a high-efficiency lattice Poisson-Boltzmann algorithm for solving the strongly nonlinear governing equations of electroos...
متن کاملDouble layer polarization and non-linear electroosmosis in and around a charged permeable aggregate
We have studied the migration of a charged permeable aggregate in electrolyte under the influence of an axial electric field and pressure gradient. The migration of the positively charged aggregate leads to a deformation of the anionic cloud around it. The hydrodynamics of the aggregate is governed by the interaction of electroosmotic flow in and around the particle, hydrodynamic friction and e...
